Bio
Tom Colling
Tom Colling:
Tom’s musical journey started at the age of 6, when he started taking lessons from Sister Mary in the first grade. A few years later, trumpet and band music came along. High school and college brought more musical study, and Tom has had the opportunity to be taught by some of the best in Wisconsin at the time.
Tom has experience in almost all types of music. He has played classical, swing/big band, polka, country, and jazz. He has played in oldies bands and bands that do modern music. He has performed for musicals and shows. If you have seen any live music over the last several decades, there is a pretty good chance you have heard Tom perform. Tom has even dabbled in jingle and soundtrack composition as well as more traditional composing.
Having recording equipment since he’s been able to press play on a tape deck, Tom has gradually honed his skills in the studio, first using the analog tape machines at Lawrence University, learning how to splice and tape, and then studying microphone types and techniques. He was fortunate to be able to tour a top studio in Chicago and has had lengthy discussions with a top industry producer, fueling the fire that was part of his musical passion.
Being a keyboard player, Tom has always been interested in synthesis and sound creation along with piano performance. He has owned, programmed, and performed on dozens of different synthesizers from virtually all major manufacturers. This is a big plus when it comes to understanding and utilizing studio equipment, both digital and analog.
Although very experienced in all of these facets of music, he knows the key to any recording is that the artist’s vision is captured, and is looking forward to working with you on obtaining your goals.
